My husband has diabetes, type I. That’s the kind where you need to take insulin injections to stay alive. Every year we ride in the ADA’s Tour de Cure in Reston, VA. I guess I’d like to do more, but I’m not sure what yet. I suppose I have two primary areas of interest:

1 – Finding a cure for Type I diabetes.

2 – Helping people avoid getting Type II diabetes, or helping them manage it.

See, Type II is largely avoidable, and doesn’t usually require insulin injections to keep the person alive. The prevalence of Type II, and its mild forms including the “pre-diabetes” diagnosis, makes a lot of people think that diabetes as a whole isn’t a big deal, and it can be easily managed.

But Type I is a different beast, and I don’t want anything taking away from the seriousness of the disease, how people who have it suffer, and the research devoted to it.

That might sound harsh, but so is Type I diabetes. More to come.
